In Brief

Packed

Sadly, my bags are packed not to head home, i.e. Berlin, or even home-home, i.e. Iowa, but to go to Freiburg to visit the military archives. And when I leave there, I will be going “home” to a home that isn’t even my home away from home, i.e. I’ll be coming back to Bonn. But then there’s only another week here, followed by a week in Hamburg, and finally back to Berlin.

On an unrelated note, I inadvertantly have begun to stockpile peanut butter.

Puppy patterns

I realize human beings are good at finding patterns even when they aren’t there, but there’s something strange going on around here (Bonn), and it’s this: puppies in pairs, or more. Sunday was a “more” day, and I saw a pack (a pack!) of golden retrievers, all with different owners. Then this morning I saw one beagle pup on my run, and one on my way to work. And on my way home, I saw one Scottisch terrier, and then two minutes later another one. What is going on?

From the archives

You can’t make this stuff up:

Dingle Foot, lawyer and socialist member of the House of Commons in London…

Emphasis mine. ‘Cause how can you not emphasize the name “Dingle Foot”?

Categorization

I have two categories of underwear: underwear I will go running in and underwear I won’t go running in. The latter is made up of the pairs I bought here. Something about the material and the cut just doesn’t work for me.

I have three categories of runs: short, medium, and long. I don’t like going on short runs, which these days are anything under four or five miles.  Why bother? Long runs are anything over ten miles; I try to do one of those a week. Yesterday’s was fifteen miles. In running underwear of course. Medium are, as you may have guessed, somewhere in between.

Happy Birthday, Dad!

I just wanted to wish my dad a happy birthday! I would call him, but given the time zone thing and his insistence on going to work on his birthday, it just won’t work.

I hope it’s a good one (despite going to work)!

And we have a winner

Deb’s guess of 1 Euro came the closest to the actual total of €7.50 for my groceries yesterday. As to why I buy bottled water: when it’s that cheap, why not? (The water around here isn’t so great.)

Programming note update

Ok, I lied. Keep checking out the blog and this page. Or subscribe to this RSS feed. For now. I apologize for the inconvenience and the future inconvenience that I’m sure will also occur.

Programming note

If you have been following me on Twitter, you might want to consider following me on Jaiku instead. It’s a one stop solution for tracking updates to the blog, my photos, my short messages throughout the day, and even whatever I end up posting to Frazr (which is really just a German version of Twitter, but with a local number so I might actually SMS it once in a while.) So, I repeat: just check my Jaiku account, or subscribe via RSS if that’s your thing. That is all.

Site update part deux

Ok, so I changed things again, moved the recent links out of the sidebar, back into the main flow of things here but without the “Ariadne’s thread” container each time (the allusion being that, like Ariadne’s thread, my list of links would show where I had been in this labyrinth that is the web. Unlike with Theseus, however, no Minotaurs were ever harmed in the process.)

Dinner Conversation

This evening I delivered dinner to (and ate it with) Deb and her friend who were scrapbooking at Deb’s place of employment. A few quotes from Deb.

  • As I’m serving: “Why are there meatballs in the sauce? I don’t like meatballs.”
  • A few minutes later, after eating one of the meatballs that ended up on her plate anyway: “These aren’t bad.”
  • After trying another one: “These are really good!”
  • While eating meatballs directly out of the saucepan: “Where did you get these? You made them? Really!?
